Preparation Reading The Definitions Most gimmick road rallyes are won in the parking lot. That’s right, the parking lot. As soon as you get your general instructions flip to the definitions first. Why? Because much of what comes before the definitions (or after) depends on definition usage. For example: The word ‘GO’ might be defined as ‘Turn Left on’. Thus,, now knowing that, you may pick up a gimmick in the introductory paragraph such as: ‘Drive carefully on all major roads, you would be surprised what some people do. Go figure.’ Thus you have a command in that introductory paragraph GO (TURN LEFT ON) Figure Road. In addition they may have a definition that reads: DRIVE—Turn Right’; believe it or not this goes into ‘DRIVE (Turn Right) carefully on all MAJOR streets or roads. Hmmm, see why the definitions are such an important part of rallying? Now a definition might read” SIDEROAD—where a road meets your road from one direction.’ and then another definition reads: ‘DIRECTION—right or left. So you should, in the parking lot, after you get the route instructions, is take a little time and circle every time the word ‘sideroad’ is used in a route instruction; that refers you back to the definition so that you can make sure the definition and sideroad are in sync. In this case a crossroad could be a sideroad, because it meets you road from one direction (yep, it meets it from two too, but does a man have one arm? Of course he does). If the definition of sideroad had included an ‘only one direction’ then only a true sideroad would do. Dennis Dorner Wheels Rally Team
